Tessar Lo

Artist Statement

Creating work with the same intentions as in my regular studio practice, but using pulp, reminded me of signing with my sister.

I became interested in the analogies of dedicated methods of communication, and both the limitations and gifts that they entail.

This work for In House is a dedication to my sister and her spirit.

Bio

Tessar Lo reaches for that mysterious place that exists within the liminal, his vision and approach is constantly evolving. Born in Indonesia and raised in Toronto, Tessar blends themes endemic to his Asian heritage with western pursuits of direct expression and materiality. Working with a variety of media, he uses acute marking, colour and texture to draw the viewer inward and create an awareness of surface and story. By stripping his work of artifice and relying on instinct, he aspires to turn seemingly mundane subjects – a corner of the backyard, a bunch of fruits, a childhood toy – into sources of humour, sensation and potential. Around familiar motifs, he constructs unfolding mythologies that stir the reservoirs of foolish wonder, and constants that lie buried within being. Since graduating from Ontario’s Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning with a BA in illustration, Tessar Lo has exhibited in galleries worldwide, from Toronto to solo and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Barcelona, Tokyo and Amsterdam. He lives and works in Toronto.
